-------------------------- We offer FREE consultations --------------------------What Is Orthokeratology? How is it different from laser eye surgery? Who is a good candidate?Orthokerotology or CRT are a non surgical correction or reversal of nearsightedness (Myopia) and astigmatism. The cornea is the front part where the light enters the eye. In nearsighted people, the cornea is usually more curved than required to focus the light on the retina. Therefore the light focuses in front of the retina (Fig.1). Orthokerotology uses specialized oxygen permeable contact lenses to reshape the cornea so that the light focuses on the retina (Fig.2), and you have a clear vision. Corneal refractive therapy lens is a new generation lens worn over-night only. After one week of over-night wear, the wearer can remove the lenses in the morning and have a clear uncorrected vision for the rest of the day.
Laser surgery reshapes the cornea with a laser beam instead of a contact lens and it completes the reshaping in a minute instead of a week. Some of my patients are afraid of surgery, others can’t afford the surgery; therefore they chose orthokerotology. Unlike laser eye surgery, the effects of this procedure is reversible and it is non invasive. Orthokerotology corrects myopia and astigmatism up to –6.00D; laser eye surgery can correct up to –16.00D. Therefore, anybody whose combined prescription of myopia and astigmatism is –6.00D or less is a good candidate. Teens are the prime candidates, since they can’t have laser surgery, and orthokerotology stops the progress of their nearsightedness.
